The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) marks an important turning point in federal education policy. After fifteen years of strong federal direction under the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, Congress decided to give states significant flexibility in how they design their education systems -- flexibility that could help states personalize learning for student success.
To help stakeholders think outside the box, we've released two resources to explore how to use opportunities in ESSA to advance personalized learning.
First, we released "New Opportunities to Advance Personalized Learning in the Every Student Succeeds Act". The resource offers side-by-side comparison of NCLB and ESSA, as well as ideas for using ESSA to advance personalized learning.
Our second ESSA resource, "Recommendations for Advancing Personalized Learning Under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)" is a guide for imagining and implementing a vision of personalized learning that aligns federal, state and local policies. It explores:
- Opportunities for leveraging ESSA to advance personalized learning
- Recommendations for strategies to build high-quality personalized learning systems through ESSA
- Guiding questions for state and local alignment to help stakeholders think through college and career readiness, equity and continuous improvement
